The humble 99er was once synonymous with a sunny day, with children - and adults - across the UK heading to an ice-cream van to get a cone of soft serve and Cadbury Flake for less than a £1.

But, with this summer clouded by a cost of living crisis, and posh ice cream shops now a staple of the high street, some people are forking out up to £10 for a frozen treat.

While many ice cream vans will still offer a classic Mr. Whippy, dessert parlours will add on the extra charges.

Amorino, who have shops across the UK, charge up to £9.20 for a soft serve sundae when ordered on Deliveroo.

They offer a create your own option, as well as classic flavours like vanilla, caramel, strawberry and lemon.

Also pushing £10 is British Patagonia in north London's trendy district of Islington.

Chin Chin, famed for their viral - incredibly indulgent - hot chocolate recently launched an ice-cream topped with 'caviar'.

The bakery pioneered a vegan 'ice crone' of soft serve in a croissant wrap which cost £9 and has people flocking from all over the city to get.

The bakery is run by Michelin-starred chefMatias Barbat who offers the likes of vanilla with pistachio chunks amid the array of flavours.

And it's not just Londoners having to splash the cash for a decent scoop.

Tsjuri in Manchester's Chinatown sells matcha softserve for £6.50, while a scoop in Moo Pie in Edinburgh will set you back £4.50 - although it does come with a topping.

Tourists in central London can head into the likes of the Instagram-famous Creme and pay £4.50 for a cone, while Soft Serve Society in Seven Dials Market starts their serves at £4.55.

Taking to Instagram to describe the dish, they wrote: 'Ruffles of ice cream with a sprinkling of veggie vanilla bean caviar that bursts on the tongue, topped w/ a handmade daisy shortbread-'.

Danish juice and coffee brand Joe & the Juice, which has more than 50 branches in London alone, and outlets across the UK including Liverpool, Brighton, Birmingham and Oxford, currently charges £4.70 for a large (16oz) latte with regular milk.

Add in a syrup, say vanilla, and you'll get charged an additional 50 pence, although unlike many other outlets, you won't be charged extra for an additional milk.

It comes after it emerged that Britain's most expensive coffee using topica beans shipped in fromJapan's 'island of eternal youth'is being sold for a whopping £265 a cup.

Coffee lovers who have a few hundred pounds to spare can find the pricey brew at Shot - a darkly-lit coffee shop based in Mayfair and Marylebone in London.

The coffee is made from typica beans, a higher quality version of the arabica beans, and have been shipped in from the Nakayama estate based on theOkinawa Island in Japan.

At Shot, the high priced beverage can be made into any form of coffee that would be found in a high street coffee shop. It is available as an espresso, macchiato, flat white, americano, cappuccino or latte.

But while the price of the drink has raised eyebrows, even the modest latte is seemingly becoming more expensive,with many coffee lovers saying they're already paying more than £5 by adding extra shots, dairy alternatives and flavoured syrups.

High-end fashion label Prada's London coffee shop in Harrods department store, launched in 2023, charges £6.50 for a latte.

Caffe Nero's is priced at £4.40 for a large latte, the same asCosta Coffee.Pret A Manger and Patisserie Valerie come in slightly cheaper at£4.05.

But this is before any additions are made - for instance, adding coconut and oat milk to your Caffe Nero beverage will set you back up to 50p.

Syrups such as caramel, vanilla and hazelnut at Costa Coffee, meanwhile, will cost up to 55p.
