Suzuki TS50X / Hustler 50 / TS50W
19832000I have tried to tell the Suzuki TS50 / Hustler 50 / TS50W model history on this page as I know it. The page is still under construction. I would be grateful of any contributions sales brochures, magazine ads, magazine articles, pictures, specs, facts, corrections etc. Please scan the material in JPEG format (large enough that all the details are visible) and send them to me. Suzuki TS50 (Hustler in Japan), the smallest displacement model of the Hustler series, was introduced in 1971 and was manufactured virtually unchanged by Suzuki until 1978. The following upgraded models were Suzuki TS50ER (19791983) and Suzuki TS50X (1984 on).Part 1: Suzuki TS50 / Hustler 50 1971—1982There were a number of different versions of the TS50 sold around the globe, due to the differences in legislation converning 50cc bikes. In many European countries, for instance, the small bikes were power restricted and sometimes even weight restricted, so that youngsters could ride their bikes without a license.
I have split this model history in two pages. The first one is for the early models (1971—1982) and thesecond page is for the later ones (1983—2000). The early export and domestic (Japan) models were fairly similar, but the later ones were not; the main difference being the engine — the domestic model had liquid-cooled engines and six-speed transmissions, while the export model were air-cooled and had five speeds.
Part 2: Suzuki TS50X / Hustler 50 / TS50W 1983—2000
1983 Suzuki year code: DThe domestic version of the Suzuki TS50 that was sold in Japan underwent a full model change. Its engine became liquid-cooled, and the transmission had now six speeds.The '83 Suzuki TS50 has a full-scale wheel size of 21 inches at the front and 18 inches at the rear and Full-floater rear suspension.Equipped with a 50cc 2-cycle water-cooled single-cylinder engine that had a proven track record in the RM series.The use of a power reed valve increased the tenacity in the low and medium speed range, and the water cooling prevented performance degradation due to heat during continuous driving, further improving durability and quietness. In addition, a full floater suspension with a square pipe swing arm, long-stroke front and rear suspension, and 21-inch large-diameter front tires had improved running performance.
The Hustler TS50's 2-stroker was more powerful than Honda's 4-stroke engine and had overwhelming acceleration.Some small improvements were added to the model during the years, but the liquid-cooled engine survived unchanged until the late 90's.
While the domestic version of the TS50 (now called TS50W) received all these upgrades, the export model only inherited the looks, and the larger wheels. The export model still had the air-cooled engine and 5-speed transmission.

The '92 Suzuki TS50XK was the only version of this model that was sold in Sweden — after some modifications were made to the engine: the 5th gear was removed, the cylinder was replaced with one without reed valve and the cylinder head was replaced with larger combustion chamber. Even the exhaust system was different. In Sweden, a moped was only allowed to have no more than 1 hp (0,74 kW) engine have a maximum speed of 30 km/h.

1994 Suzuki year code: RIn Japan, the model was still called Suzuki Hustler 50, or TS50W. The export models and the domestic models were similar, but not identical. The domestic model had shorter seat, it didn't have the front fork covers, the rear mudguard was different... It's quite easy to tell them apart.The last incarnation of the air-cooled Suzuki TS50, the TS50XK (export model) was launched for the '94 season. There were no updates made for Suzuki TS50X after 1994. The TS50X was sold unchanged until the model was discontinued in 2000.
