Gekko Valorant: Initiator Guide (1)

It’s time to cheer for Gekko in Valorant, a character with some extra buddies that will bring you and your team some great opportunities to win extra rounds. An agent created to initiate fights and create chances to attack or retreat depending on the situation. He even gives additional value to each game with his helpers and short ability cooldowns; just don’t forget to pick up his pets after using them.

Who is Gekko in Valorant?

In Valorant, Gekko is the sixth Initiator and agent number 22 in the game, introduced in patch 6.04. He owns four pets that are part of his ability kit in-game. Gekko’s real name is Mateo Armendáriz De la Fuente, and his nickname is Teo. He is half-Mexican and half-American since his family is part of the Mexican diaspora in Los Angeles, California. He’s living with his immigrant Hispanic mother in Los Angeles. Not only that, but he’s fluent in English and Spanish.

Gekko has a chill personality, giving positive vibes to everyone on the team, with a recurring impulse to hype up the team occasionally. You will hear him speaking with informalities and colloquial words during matches. It seems he was in contact with agents in the Valorant Protocol before he was formally recruited; it’s an odd case because of the secrecy of the Protocol. Reyna talks about him in some teaser, creating a bond that may lead to Reyna’s recommendation to the Protocol. He received training from Brimstone, and Gekko saved him on his cellphone as “Beard Papi”. He also takes lessons from Harbor, calling him “Coach”.

Gekko in Valorant brings four pets to the field, Mosh, Dizzy, Wingman, and Thrash; he can summon them from his cross-body bag and then pick them up to reuse them during the match rounds. Each pet has a unique ability, allowing for some great opportunities throughout the different maps. All his pets work in coordination with each other to build a solid one-agent-and-four-pets team. The pets also can sense when Gekko is in danger, providing an added edge for your team and making them an excellent asset to the agent.

Valorant Gekko and Pets: Power And Abilities

Gekko in Valorant is a great pick for those players who like a versatile initiator since his abilities and pets bring value each round; the chaos they can cause for opponents is devastating for them but a fabulous addition for you. Here are Gekko’s powers and abilities:

Dizzy (E)

Dizzy is a small armadillo-like pet who floats near Gekko when idle. It’s activated with the “E” control, and Gekko will throw her into a selected location. Dizzy will attack, summoning a bubble around her and firing a blue liquid that blocks the vision of enemies for a few seconds; Dizzy will fire this substance out of his tale, which has a slimy, sticky texture. Once Dizzy is done with her attack, she won’t return automatically; players need to run and take the bubble with Dizzy inside that is floating on the map if they want to call this ability again. To recall this ability, players need to wait 10 seconds and pick up Dizzy again.

Wingman (Q)

Another of Gekko’s pets is Wingman, his second ability. Wingman is a small, yellow creature with some similarities to an axolotl but with a black metallic shell. This little guy can have up to three different uses; first, Wingman can look for nearby enemies after Gekko commands him to follow a path. If he finds an enemy, he will fire a concussion blast in a triangular shape right into the enemy agent, and he will quickly come back to tell Gekko where the enemy agent is. That’s not all this little creature is capable of; he can also plant a Spike when Gekko picks a site to either plant it or defuse it when needed. Players need to be cautious, however, as Wingman is fragile, having only 20 health points, and he will return to a dormant globule when he finishes his business. Players will need to pick him up to have another charge of this ability after a short cooldown of 10 seconds.

Mosh Pit (C)

For the third pet, we have Mosh; this curious pet tends to float within Gekko’s cross-body bag. When Gekko summons Mosh, it’s like an explosion, literally. Mosh is like a frog egg, and when Gekko throws him away, he will create a green, slimy, large circular mass on the floor. Be cautious, as everyone inside this perimeter will receive the effects of the explosion, it will detonate shortly after hitting the ground.

Thrash (X, Ultimate)

Gekko’s final pet, and assist to his ultimate, is Thrash. This ultimate allows Gekko to use Thrash as a puppet. Sometimes, he can lose control. When you cast this ability, it will link Thrash’s mind and steer with Gekko, letting Thrash go into the enemy territory to lunge forward and later explode, detaining any enemies near the small radius of the explosion. Just like Gekko’s other pets, Thrash will revert into a small bubble Gekko needs to pick up again before using, but there’s a catch this time since players can only reclaim Thrash once after his initial cooldown time of 10 seconds.

Gekko Valorant: Playing Tips

This agent is fun to play because of his potent kit and his charisma, which are impressive. Gekko brings a brilliantly versatile playstyle into every match, and with the correct understanding of his abilities and the game maps, the possibilities are endless. Here are some tips for mastering Gekko in Valorant:

Pick up his pet abilities at every chance you get. Gekko is dependent on his pets; leaving them unattended in their bubble after the attack for too long will mean they vanish from play. Rendering you unable to use them at all again for the duration of the round, so always make time to regroup.

Always make use of Gekko’s abilities if given the chance. Wingman is great for distracting enemy agents but is excellent for planting and defusing spikes if you feel the situation calls for it; he’s more than an enemy tracker. Like Dizzy, she is a great ability to initiate a fight and a suitable option to distract enemies and retreat if needed. It’s always a good idea to play around with the abilities in different scenarios; you’ll soon learn just how much can be gained from these exciting creatures.

Pair Gekko with agents that can bring the best out of him and his pets, like Astra with her Gravity Well or Raze with her Paint Shells that can potentiate Mosh Pit. Don’t be afraid to try out different combinations and create chaos for your foes with Gekko’s abilities.

Gekko is an initiator, and a great one at that, given the mess you can create if you play him aggressively. It’s important to understand how this role fits Gekko, and playing him correctly will bring more synergy in-game and inside the team. Gekko’s role is to provide information and assist with the blinding Dizzy inflicts or the concussion effect Wingman utilizes to gain an advantage over the enemy agents.

Gekko in Valorant is great for fake sites; he’s an agent with a versatile play style, and since he is great as an Initiator, Gekko can create new opportunities with fake plays or fake scenarios. He will favor his team to build a quick back door strategy using his kit, distracting the enemy team without problems.

Use Gekko’s abilities correctly. It’s not just throwing them and shooting, he has a potent kit and can bring plenty of opportunities into each round by just placing the abilities at the right time and place. Mosh Pit is the most relevant here since it covers a decent area, and you would rather not place half of your circular attack zone against a wall and lose half of your firepower.

Gekko Valorant FAQ

Can Gekko Reuse His Ultimate ability?

Yes, Gekko in Valorant can reuse his ultimate ability, but it's not quite as simple as reusing his other abilities. There are two different factors to consider with Thrash, the first being that wherever the ability was used is where his bubble must be collected, and the second is that he can only be reused once per round.

Can Gekko’s Dizzy Pet be Shot by an Enemy Agent?

Dizzy is Gekko's stellar ability, and though it can be difficult to aim and anticipate her movement, enemies could potentially take her down and prevent Gekko's advances.

Can Gekko Detain His Own Teammates?

Gekko can detain his teammates using his ultimate ability, Thrasher; however, this would cause one less use during the round. It’s not the best idea to detain your teammates and waste a charge of Gekko’s ultimate.
